Dear Coach...
Wondering if/why you should write an ebook? And, if so,
what on?
Then, you'll really enjoy today's lesson...
Why bother writing an ebook?
Credibility. Authorship connotes credibility.
Pleasure. Take joy in putting your ideas down on
epaper.
Catalyst. Your first ebook is ALWAYS a catalyst for
something else. Always.
Value Added. Easy/simple/free way to add value to
others.
Passive revenue. eBooks provide immediate and 99%
passive revenue.
Referral engine. eBooks lead in to other
work/programs.
eSkills Enhancer. The new eSkills you learn
crafting/marketing an ebook will serve you well in other ways,
too.
Selecting an
angle
There are several ways to organize or package your ebook.
These include...
The "How-To" ebook
How-to printed books always sell and so do eBooks. How-to books
provide step by step directions or guidance to the reader in an
area. How to books are 'situational solutions or guides.'
Examples:
How to Coach Anyone, Even Yourself
How to Stop Your Divorce Even If It's Too Late
How to Learn Excel in 18 Simple Steps
How to Double Your Salary in 90 Days
The "Special Report" ebook.
Special reports contain data and other information on a
specific topic organized to introduce, report and summarize
content for the reader. Included are numerical/statistical
data, real examples, trends, observations, analyses, conclusions
and references.
Examples:
The Annual Report on the Coaching Industry
The Effect of the eCommerce on Small Business
The Lifestyle Challenges Faced by Creative Geniuses
Having It All: Special Report on the Value of Coaching in
Corporations
The "Secrets Of" ebook.
People love 'secrets' of the experts, so if you're an expert
or you can interview folks who are, then this approach might
work well for you. A Secrets Of ebook is similar to a How
To book, but implies extra special knowledge, shortcuts,
systems, that are worth a LOT to the reader.
Examples:
Secrets of Guerilla eMarketers
The 12 Secrets of the 20 Year Happy Marriage
Get Out While You Can: Secrets from a Suburbanite Who
Escaped Just in Time
The 18 Secrets to Great Coaching
Leadership Secrets of Today's Top 100 Managers
The "Principles Of" ebook.
Some folks prefer to learn principles rather than how to or
just information.
Examples:
The 28 Principles of Attraction
The 17 Immutable Laws of Success
The Only 7 Marketing Strategies You'll Ever Need
Money Talks: The Principles of Successful Conversations
About Money
The "Stories" ebook.
Some folks prefer to learn by reading the stories of
successful people.
Examples:
My Life as a Meme: 27 Great Ideas Ahead of the Memetic
Curve from the Inventors Themselves
Beyond Recovery: 12 True Stories of Recovering Alcoholics
Who Are Now Flourishing
My First 3 Clients: Stories from $100k Coaches When They
First Were Getting Started
New Mothers, Old Souls: How to Bring Spirituality To Your
Child at An Early Age
Choosing a
Topic
There are about a million things you could write an ebook
on. The question is, how do you select just one?
Here are my suggestions...
Pick a topic on something that you'd like to learn more about
vs. waiting to become an expert on something that you aren't
yet.
Pick a topic that you feel others in your circle are also
interested in.
Pick a topic that you can find real life examples to include vs
'general information.'
Don't be afraid to go highly targeted with your
topic/focus. Don't try to serve everyone; just serve the
people with the exact problems/situation as you'll be writing
about. Be situationally specific as much as possible.
Select a specific subject, not a general or generic
one. Don't write about success; write about people
who have been successful despite the odds, or a specific segment
of the population who has made it in a surprising way.
Don't write about what you should write about; rather, write
about what you most want to write about. You'll need this
passion/interest level to get you through to completion.
Crafting a
Title
People seem to have a challenge with titling their book and
ebook. Here are my suggestions...
Modify any of the titles above to fit your topic.
Seriously, just insert some of your words into the titles above,
replacing my words. The above titles were mostly made up
anyway.
Try to include numbers, like "12 secrets of",
etc.
Often the title won't come to you at first, so start writing
instead and the title will usually come to you. You can
always use a working title in the meantime.
Be honest but also make your title intriguing or
surprising.
Sell the sizzle not just the steak, i.e., "The 17 Steps to
Financial Success That Anyone Can Follow" vs "How to
Succeed."
I hope that this has been helpful.
Tomorrow's lesson is on writing your first chapter and getting
the content you need to fill your eBook.
