DTMOPP - Our Super Learning Method

When you see the DTMOPP next to a class, you know that the class will be delivered using our super learning method.  DTMOPP is an acronym for the steps to mastery in any endeavor: Desire, Theory, Method, Observe, Practice and Perform.

On this page you will find:
1) An outline of a typical DTMOPP class
2) A brief explanation of how the method works
3) A brief over view of our innovative tele-triad technique used in our DTMOPP tele classes

A typical DTMOPP-based class:

Most of our DTMOPP classes are delivered in a series of 2.5 hour sessions. A typical 2.5 hour session looks like this:

Pre-Class assignment

  • Read the Learning Guide! To get the details about the theory and method covered in the next session.
    We don’t
  • Review the THEORY and METHOD taught in the class.
  • Listen to recording (or read transcript) of key content.
  • Review the tele-triad instructions; you will see your triad partners for the course and your break-out pin code.

The Session: The Dialogue, Theory, Method, Observation & Practice

  • Welcome!
  • DIALOGUE sparks the DESIRE for The benefits of the topic
  • Brief review the THEORY behind the content in the class - we assume you read the learning guide and listened to the pre-class recordings.
  • Review the METHOD to be studied and practiced
  • Coaching Demonstration: OBSERVE a live coaching session using the method
  • Coaching Session debrief: Exploring the method together
  • Brief review of triad instructions
  • Triads (in a teleclass this would be tele-triads) In the triad each individual puts what they have learned into PRACTICE as the coach, the client and as an observer.
The coach conducts a session focused on using the method being studied.
The client brings something from one of the games of their life to the conversation
The observer provides an informed critique on the coach’s use of the method.
  • Come back from the triads back to the big group
  • Learning of the theory, method and related content will be deepened through dialogue based on the triad experience
  • Review key points
  • Wrap up the class

Fieldwork: Perform

The students are given an assignment to PERFORM the method with clients or colleagues.  A typical assignment would be to conduct 5 coaching sessions using the method followed by filling in a form to reflect on what you did and learned.

The elements of DTMOPP

bluesquare-gif Dialogue sparks Desire
Why do you want to learn and master this subject?  How will it serve you and your life?  There must be some “stirring inside you” that will fuel your efforts and willingness to do what it will take to master the craft

bluesquare-gif Theory
The thinking behind the practice of the craft.  This part of the process includes gathering information and studying the thoughts of teachers and practitioners of the craft.

bluesquare-gif Method
A method is a way to produce a consistent result through a sequence of actions.  It is the way something is done; the thoughts, actions, tools, models and practices of the craft.

bluesquare-gif Observe
Observe others practicing the craft. Learn from what they do and do not do. Observe experienced practitioners AND novices.  Notice the difference in the results that are created.  As you observe you will learn and integrate the steps of the practice.

bluesquare-gif Practice
Repetition of the activities and techniques of the craft.  Observe the results of your efforts.  How do they compare with what you have observed?  The key is to practice the right things!  Practicing a method that does not produce the desired results does not lead to mastery.

bluesquare-gif Perform
A performance is your opportunity to display your current level of proficiency. The more you perform, receive feedback and adjust what you are doing, the faster you improve your skill. We encourage our students to use what they are learning with clients and colleagues outside of class and ask for feedback.

The final phase of Performance occurs in the Coaching Practicum sessions (a seperate program from the actual class) where the coach works in front of his/her colleagues and a certified coach who provides a written critique.

The tele-triad experience

One of the challenges with a typical teleclass is the difficulty of creating an environment for safe and active practice and critique. Practice is essential to the development of mastery in the craft of coaching.

CoachVille has solved this problem with the tele-triad method. After learning a specific method on a large bridge with the entire class, the class will break out onto smaller bridge lines in groups of three - just like a triad in a live workshop. While on the smaller bridge each participant will have the opportunity to actively practice what has been learned while receiving a critique from a colleague in the class who is observing the session.

Another benefit of the tele-triad is the opportunity to develop a closer relationship with 2 of your colleagues in the class through a coaching experience.

With the tele-triad CV has continued to maximize the benefit of teleclass learning - time and place convenience - while reducing the drawbacks - the lack safe practice, critique and personal connection.
