Expanded Coaching Certainty Certainty – the synthesis of confidence and humility – is an energetic quality that quickly inspires credibility and trust between the coach and the player.
Coaching certainty is the sum of three factors:
a) Knowing that you know the game – understanding the value of your wisdom, experience and skill
b) Knowing that you can help others win the game – understanding the value of your reliable coaching method
c) Knowing that the player has what it takes and will do what it takes to win – understanding that you can quickly evaluate talent and desire in order to choose your clients / players skillfully
My certainty is greater than your doubt! We will explore the notion of certainty throughout the program. Each section of course is designed to increase your understanding in one or more of the three key factors.
Topic Details Topic 1: Brief Recap of Clarify Focus on the Winnable Game The winnable game sets the stage for everything that follows because the coach must know what the coachee is trying to accomplish and why. In this part of the process the coach helps the coachee answer the questions: What is most meaningful to me? Why am I doing this? What does success look like? Using coaching pattern language we would say it this way: What game are you playing? Why are you playing this game? What does winning look like? What will winning this game mean in your life? What do you have to learn to play this game well and win on your own terms?
Topic 2: Personalized Learning and Planning - Skills The coach must be prepared to help the coachee learn the skills that will be needed to accomplish the desired result – to win the game at hand. This must be done in a highly personalized way because every coachee situation is unique. If the coach does not personally have the knowledge, they must help the coachee find it.
Topic 3: Personalized Learning and Planning - Strategy Then the coach must help the coachee craft an action plan. A plan must take into account sound strategy as well as the coachee current strengths and weaknesses. In this part of the process the coach helps the coachee answer the questions: What do I do next? How do I do it? Often the plan and strategy are best crafted AFTER the internal game and environment are explored in a session.
Topic 4: Expand internal game Awareness - Part 1 Use visualization techniques to “Put your player in the game”. In an optimal coaching relationship the coach is able to observe the client / player “at play” in the activities that are a part of the game being coached. When direct observation is not possible, the coach can use a variety of visualization techniques to explore the game activities with the client in conversation. These conversations will often reveal core values and areas of potential inner conflict.
Topic 5: Expand internal game Awareness - Part 2 Whenever an individual steps up to a goal or a challenge that is bigger than what they have done in the past, any pattern of feeling, thought or action that is in conflict with the new desire will rise to the surface and present a problem! This is not a bad thing. In fact, these inner conflicts mark the path to personal growth. In this part of the process the coach helps the coachee resolve the questions: Why don’t I do what I could do? Why do I feel so stuck?
Soon after the coachee gets into action with his/her game plan the experience of getting stuck will occur! This is a natural part of doing anything new. When the objective is particularly meaningful, you will see many frameworks – a way of seeing the world - come to the surface. This is where the coach needs a great deal of experience and tools to help the coachee work through and transcend patterns that do not serve him/her in reaching the objective.
Topic 6: Designing Environments - Part 1 We have a unique bi-directional relationship with the world around us: we adapt to the environment around us AND create the environment as a reflection of ourselves at the same time. There are an infinite number of elements to our worlds and we have organized them into what we call the “9 Environments of You”. By coaching the individual AND the environments you create a path for sustainable results. In this part of the process the coach helps the coachee answer the questions: How do I build a deeper connection with my world? How do I create sustainable results without struggle?
Topic 7: Designing Environments - Part 2 To sustain change, the coach must help the coachee make immediate changes to the world around them to reflect the changes being made inside them – in thoughts, feelings and actions. By using pattern language the coach can help the coachee identify elements in 9 the environments that are in conflict with the desired result. Then the coach will help the coachee put new elements into the environments that bring the objective to life.
Topic 8: Evaluate Progress - Part 1 Reaching any objective requires constant course correction. The couch must keep one eye on what the coachee is doing and another on where the coachee is going. Often the coachee won’t see that what they are doing isn’t working! This is the job of the coach. Another major part of Evaluating Progress is the essential work of transforming experiences of losing into learning. Every challenging game will include experiences of winning and losing. Often the coach can use a losing experience to create a catalyst for growth.
Topic 9: Evaluate Progress - Part 2 Celebration!! In this Topic we will explore the importance of acknowledging progress. We will explore the best ways to debrief victories and use them as an opportunity for learning.
