The Beagle (also known as Bagel) Worm has reared
its ugly head again, this time in the form W32/Bagle.j@MM.
This worm has hit many CoachVille members and staffers hard; here's
some basic information on it to help you avoid it:
The Beagle Worm only effects machines with the
Windows Operating System; Mac OS and Unix computers are not
effected.
This is a mass-mailing worm with the following
characteristics (Copyright
2004 Network Associates):
-
contains its own SMTP engine to construct
outgoing messages
-
harvests email addresses from the victim
machine
-
the From: address of messages is spoofed
-
attachment is likely a password-protected zip
file, with the password included in the message body.
-
contains a remote access component
(notification is sent to hacker)
The message-bodies are constructed with several
parts, to effectively customize the email, to make it appear to be a
legitimate warning notification.
If
you get an email like this, don't open the attachment...delete the
message as soon as possible! Also, make sure your virus
protection is up to date. The major virus protection software makers
all have updates for this destructive worm available for download on
their respective sites.
If you think that you may be infected with
Beagle.j, and are unsure how to check your system, you may download
the Stinger tool from McAfee to scan your system and remove the
virus if present. Please note that this is not a substitute for
appropriate virus protection!
