The $0 to $60K Mentor Coaching Program:
The Time Has Come!

By Amanda Murphy, $0 to $60K Mentor Coach

In 1999, I took my first-ever coaching class. It was a four-week introduction to coaching for people who were exploring this career.

In the first session, the teleclass leader asked us to write down the amount of money we wanted to make as coaches. Then the leader went around the room and asked us to share our numbers. I said, “I’m not going to be working full time, but I’d really like to make $50,000 a year.” The leader said, “As a coach, you can absolutely do that!”  Wow! Great! Sign me up!

Of course, I was never told the sobering truth. Stephen Fairley, author of  “Getting Started in Personal and Executive Coaching: How to Create A Thriving Coaching Practice,” recently shared these statistics:

  •   73% of all coaches make less than $10,000 in their first year.

  • Only 60% of all second-year coaches have managed to find 10 paying clients.

  • Less than 11% of coaches make more than $50,000 by their second year in practice.

Like many new coaches, I spent months and months trying out different coaching specialties and niches looking for the one that was right for me. I tried to force myself to employ any marketing idea I came across. All the while I slipped farther into the red and constantly worked against my fear that this just was not going to work.

Eventually I figured out enough about myself, became a good enough coach, and created effective enough business and marketing systems that my business did take off. But first I had to wander down the same path that the relatively few successful coaches had already traveled.

I was never told how to become financially successful. This aspect of coaching has been sadly underemphasized in many coach training programs. The proof is in the numbers: most of us are not making it.

This is unacceptable to us at CoachVille. The time has come for us to tackle this problem head-on. A crack team of experts at CoachVille put their heads together to figure out and articulate exactly why most coaches don’t make money and how to fix it. The result is the three Masteries of the Professional Coach. We believe that financial success in coaching requires all three masteries:

Master Coaching Proficiencies.  If you don’t coach people very well, your value model is unreliable. Clients may come, but they won’t stay, and they won’t refer others to you. Your marketing will be hollow. Coaching mastery gives you a solid value foundation upon which to build your business.

Master Business Skills.  If you are the greatest coach in the world but nobody knows you exist, you are done. If your systems are disorganized or nonexistent, your clients will not feel comfortable and taken care of. Mastering business skills converts your coaching talent into money.

Master Yourself. If you are more afraid than ambitious, you are limited to a level of success just small enough to keep you feeling safe. If you are fooling yourself about the kind of coaching at which you excel or how you function best, all of your energy goes into that self-deception. Mastering yourself allows you to get out of your own way and let your natural ability to create and attract incredible success run free.

CoachVille has created the $0 to $60K in one year Mentor Coaching Program to take motivated and talented coaches through the process of achieving all three masteries. It is a ground-breaking project, and a true labor of love.

In the $0 to $60K program, a team of 19 coaches have been carefully screened and selected. Each mentor will take a group of up to 10 mentees through a one-year transformative process including School of CoachVille classes, business skills training, and personal growth. The program features the support and guidance of both the mentor coach and a rotating set of buddy coaches.

We at CoachVille intend that this program will finally break the pattern that keeps new coaches in struggle mode. We think we have the keys, and we look forward to helping you put the pedal to the metal in your coaching business. Come and check it out at www.CoachVilleMentoring.com Seatbelts are optional!

Amanda Murphy is a mentor coach in CoachVille’s $0 to $60K program. She works with business owners who are sick and tired of their marketing efforts falling flat. She helps them match their strongest talents with their clients’ needs in a way that takes their businesses from mediocre to making a difference. She can be found at www.AmandaMurphy.com.

0-60K Featured Mentor - Michael Port

How long have you been coaching?

I’ve been coaching professionally for thirteen months. And I’m proud to say that I built a 6 figure practice in twelve. I’ve worked way too much, haven’t slept enough, gained 15 pounds, moved from Manhattan to Bucks County, PA and got married. So it’s been quite a year. But now I’m settling in to my practice and a new way of life and getting back in shape!

What’s the most exciting personal project you’re working on, and why?

I can’t choose one! I’m the Project Performer! I work on at least three projects at all times!! It is said that two big projects at a time is most efficient but I feel best working on three or more at a time… call me crazy.

The three projects that I’m currently working on are:

  1. A Business Architecture Design program for coaches at Coachville. It’s a 4 week program that includes group learning and one-on-one coaching with me and my partner Hal Macomber (we’re The Project Guys, I’m the Performer and he’s the Reformer, www.TheProjectGuys.com). The mission of the program is to help coaches design a business architecture for their coaching practice in 4 weeks that is evolutionary, revolutionary, self-sustaining and revenue generating!

  2. Hal and I are also working on a really cool application for our website that will help people find project partners and joint venture partners. It’s sort of like a dating service for people who want to JV. Think of it like this…. if you’re up to big things and you want to produce a remarkable project – you’re going to need partners to joint venture with. You’ll go to www.TheProjectGuys.com and post your project needs. Those who can fill your needs will contact you about a joint venture.

  3. The third project is getting ready to go on the road with Dave Buck! He’s asked me to present the Build Your Practice Now Program with him and then stay on and do practicum days on Branding; helping coaches Brand themselves in the world. I attribute my early success as a coach to him (which was only one year ago) because I modeled him and his coaching practice. You can see what I mean at www.FreeAgentAdvice.com.

I’m mentioning this last, but truly it should be first in the order. My 0-60K Mentor Group! I just think it’s the coolest thing in the world to be a Mentor to these guys. I’m going to help them go from 0-60K in one year and in some cases more, I’m sure. And they are going to teach me how to be a better coach. My group and I started to get to know each other this month. We had two group calls and our first one-on-one session and already they’re seeing stars. Stars in themselves. In the first two weeks we’ve covered how to draft a simple business plan, how to talk about coaching, how to orient your coaching and your life around your strengths, how to create your first free offering, and how to flaunt your quirks and stand out of the crowd. We’ve also had an initial discussion around coaching fees. Oh, and the coolest thing… they are working together on creating events and experiences to use as offerings to potential clients. They are literally doing it together. Teams of e-course building fanatics. Teams of teleclass design junkies. They are working together. The key to success for the solo-professional - joint ventures! And they are up to the task in a big way. I promise, you’ll be hearing about them in the very near future.

How are you able to do so much?

I’m a bit hyperactive and compulsive! But in addition to those wonderfully attractive qualities, I create content, programs and systems that I can leverage across numerous platforms and various niche markets. The work that I do is based on helping solo-professionals build big PHAT thriving businesses. Within that framework we’ll focus on branding, marketing, project producing and more. But here’s the rub… all the content and programs that I produce can be leveraged across the multiple niche markets that I work with; fitness and wellness professionals, coaches, performing artists and general solo-professionals and micro-business owners. I also make sure that I have a key partner in every project that I do. It’s essential.

Michael Port is a solo-professional extraordinaire as he built a 6-figure coaching practice in under a year. He's known as "the guy to call when you're tired of thinking small" and has been described by Dave Buck as a "fast moving target."
